Uranium lingers beneath Oklahoma's soil more than 50 years after Karen Silkwood's warning
1+ week, 3+ day ago (823+ words) Uranium from the former Kerr-McGee plant still remains in the groundwater around the Logan County site despite cleanup efforts beginning 50 years ago. It has been 51 years since nuclear whistleblower Karen Silkwood died in a car crash in Logan County, but the work to clean up radioactive material at the site she once worked continues. Silkwood worked at the Kerr-McGee Cimarron plant in Crescent, a site that operated uranium and mixed oxide fuel fabrication facilities. The history of what took place at the plant lives on in the Oscar-nominated film "Silkwood," but reminders of the past also live in the land. "In the course of operating the Uranium Plant, a-considerable amount of soil outside the plant was contaminated with low-enriched uranium," said a 1994 NRC document. >> Watch the full one-hour special into Karen Silkwood's death below.
